DotLeap 106 - a night of slashing

Polkadot Updates

🔴 ⭕️ Relay Chain

total supply - 1.26b DOT | staking - 45.8% | parachains & crowdloans - 10%

  • Polkadot 0.9.34 has been released. Note this is a runtime-only release; no new node software is included in this release.
  • USDT is now sufficient on Statemint. Sufficiency means that an account can hold this asset without also holding DOT, and this asset can be used for transaction fees. For more details, see here.
  • OmniBTC has won the most recent parachain lease auction.

🔴 🏛 Governance

  • Referendum 85, seeking to allow Kapex to upgrade itself via runtime upgrade, has passed.
  • Referendum 88, proposing to approve a Treasury Proposal for Snowbridge, a trustless Polkadot-Ethereum bridge, is passing with 99% in favor.
  • Referendum 91, proposing to increase the maximum number of nomination pools to 64, is currently passing with 99% in favor.
  • Referendum 92, seeking to cancel Referendum 89, is passing unanimously.
  • Referendum 93, proposing a new registrar but with no other contextual information, is failing with 2% in favor and 26 days left to vote.
  • Motion 304, to fund the Polkadot Hackathon: North America prize pool, was approved.
  • Motion 307, to cover the ongoing costs (Q3 2022) for RadiumBlock’s public endpoint infrastructure, was approved.
  • Motion 308, to fund milestones 3 & 4 of Kampela’s development of a hardware signer and key storage, is under consideration.
  • Motion 309, to fund Subscan to provide ecological users with an open-source toolset, was approved.
  • Motion 310, to seed the Polkadot Alliance, is currently under consideration.
  • Motion 311, to fund the development of Uptest—a tool for testing Pallet functionality before and after runtime upgrades, is under consideration.

Kusama Updates ₑₓₚₑcₜ cₕₐₒₛ

🦅 ⭕️ Relay Chain

total supply - ~13.03m KSM | staking - 49.2% | parachains & crowdloans - 2%

  • Last Thursday night, 334 validators were reported offline and slashed. Note that slashes are not applied for 7 days (28 eras), during which time they can be canceled by governance. In the past, slashes associated with software issues have always been canceled on Kusama.
  • The new Polkadot version has many runtime changes focused on optimizing OpenGov on Kusama. For details, see the “Runtime” section of the Release Notes here.

🦅 🏛 Governance

  • The first OpenGov Referendum whitelisted by the Polkadot Fellowship has passed and executed, allowing block production on the Kintsugi parachain to restart.
  • Referendum 6, canceling two invalid Referenda (1 and 2), has passed. That said, due to an issue with the UI, it will only execute in 15 million blocks in the future.
  • Referendum 16, which should fix the last slashing event on Kusama, will enact at block 15,722,953 today. Specifically, this Referendum will cancel all slashes and restart elections (which involves several steps; see link above for details). However, this will NOT reverse any chilling. A PR is ready for this, but it will require a runtime upgrade to enact.
  • Referendum 17, which batches all upgrades for Kusama's system parachains: Statemine and Encointer, is currently passing.
  • Referendum 251, proposing to swap parachain slots for Zeitgeist, has passed.
  • There are 13 active OpenGov Referenda on which you can vote. To understand OpenGov (also called Gov v2 or Gov2), you can read the Polkadot Wiki article.
