MovrPlace: Reimagining r/Place

In case you missed it, in 2017 Reddit revealed their yearly April Fool’s experiment: Place. This one was different. Place had a simple beginning; a single Reddit user could only place a single tile every 5 minutes. This encouraged users to collaborate to create a cohesive piece resulting in some real gems; it was essentially a collaborative canvas. Collaboration started simple, but the hive mind’s vision began to explode into intricate pieces with amazing variety and depth. Check out that brief video above, if you need to, to really get an idea of how it works. Remember, each pixel is inked by one person so any cohesive image was a coordinated effort.

Communities arose with a common goal of creating a masterpiece out of pixels and defending it at all costs. There was the Black Void, the Blue Corner and the Rainbow Road. Many more groups teamed up to represent their country’s flag, video game characters and sports teams logos. All of these coordinated efforts sprawled out in real time and the evolution was impressive. Reddit closed Place on April 3rd, 2017 and the final piece is archived on Reddit’s platform. Many derivatives of this phenomenon have attempted to replicate this spark of imagination, but none have really come close.

Enter MovrPlace.

This initiative arose from the minds of the lead developers at Neon Crisis, an NFT project launched on Moonriver ($MOVR). The lead developers, Cicada and Kenji, have been ironing out the details for weeks in collaboration with the Neon Crisis community. In slight contrast to r/Place, MovrPlace requires you purchase your drawing to store it on the canvas. While you are drawing, the price of your drawing will be updated in real time before you complete your transaction. Yes, someone could black out the entire canvas — for 13K USD! $MOVR spent will be divided in the following manner:

• 95% to charity
• 2.5% to Frontend Development
• 2.5% to the future Neon Crisis DAO

So How Can You Participate?

1. Obtain a Metamask wallet and add Moonriver Network to your wallet

2. Get some $MOVR and transfer to you wallet. Expect no more than about $5–10 USD for a simple drawing. Remember collaboration is key to sustain your art

3. Go to the MovrPlace discord

4. Join in with your community, join ours or just get ready to draw what feels right!

5. Get ready for launch of MovrPlace; the website will be released on the discord and announced elsewhere when live

We have partnered with multiple teams across the Kusama and Polkadot ecosystems to select charities of interest. All you have to do is draw your picture, sign the transaction and select which charity your $MOVR should go to. We hope this sparks the imagination of the outstanding community within Dotsama and beyond. Neon Crisis

The team behind MovrPlace is Neon Crisis, the original cyberpunk, techno-dystopian NFT project in the Dotsama ecosystem. This play-and-earn NFT project takes a unique approach to rarity by including a roll for visual rarity (typical PFP) and a roll for skills rarity (to be used in future PvP battles). They will also be one of the first NFT projects to utilize RMRK 3.0, the most advanced NFT technology on Earth. This technology allows for many alternate ways of interacting and using NFTs, one of which being able to equip and own other NFTs. Cicada, the lead developer for Neon Crisis, is also the lead developer writing RMRK technology into smart contracts for EVM compatibility — RMRK 3.0. He and Kenji, the front end developer for Neon Crisis, have worked tirelessly with the community to bring forth an amazing NFT project. One of their main goals is to foster a community of creators and help them realize their own visions within the Web3 space.
