Pallets: The Building Blocks of Blockchains - How They Work in Polkadot

Every time I explain Polkadot for the first time I'm in awe of it's accomplishments

>> How does the pallet actually work?

- The runtime logic of a chain is a program that is composed of pallets E.g. the Polkadot relay chain has pallets for staking, governance, renting out blockspace etc.
22:18

- It's essentially a piece of Rust code, consisting of a bit of state and a few functions
22:19

- Baked into the runtime upgrades
22:19

- So it can only change with runtime upgrades
22:19

- In Polkadot they are fairly easy. We call them forkless upgrades because the chain doesn't need a hardfork to upgrade. It just swaps out the runtime from one block to the next as agreed by governance

Pallets: The Special Tools

Imagine you're building a giant castle with Legos. Each Lego piece is like a tiny tool that helps you build something specific (pallets), like a wall or a window.

Blockchains are like giant castles in the computer world, but instead of Legos, they use special tools called pallets. These pallets do different things, like keeping track of your toy money or letting you vote on which movie to watch with your family.

The cool thing about Polkadot's pallets is that they're like super Legos. You can easily swap them out to make the castle even better without having to take the whole thing apart (forkless upgrade). So, blockchains built with pallets can change and improve much faster.

Now, imagine creating a custom blockchain for your school or club, with features tailored to your needs. Do pallets make blockchain development more accessible for everyone? How could this change the way we use blockchains in the future? Share your thoughts. 💎💎💎

Enjoy building! Cheers! 🍺

Wavin GoodPost author

They call me a-not-so-Dr. Wavin Good. Blockchain architect by accident, an aspiring music-visualizing maestro, a chef of slightly-burnt midnight ramen, and my love for beer is as bubbly and persistent as a hard fork on a Friday night.

Co-founded Ethereum, birthed Polkadot, and still chases shiny tech like a Bitcoin-hangover canary with a crypto itch.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, friends. This blockchain lark is a messy business, like wrangling cats in a mosh pit. But hey, at least the beer's always cold, the code keeps me warm, and who knows, maybe one day we'll build a future where everyone can raise a glass to a decentralized pint of freedom.

Cheers! 🍺
