Unlocking Polkadot's Next Evolution: The Breakthrough of Asynchronous Backing

It's a big upgrade coming to @Polkadot...

And it's expected to help deliver up to 10x higher throughput for Polkadot's parachain consensus protocol. Click the link in the next post to find out more!

Async Backing will go live on @kusamanetwork

soon after the next runtime upgrade. But how does it work? And how will it help teams building on Polkadot? Find out more in our blog with diagrams and video. 👇

📰 Asynchronous Backing: The Technical Lowdown

Asynchronous backing is just around the corner, and is expected to deliver up to 10x higher throughput for Polkadot's parachain consensus protocol. In effect, this would be brought about when combined with proof-of-validity reclaim (filling unused block space). Async backing will go live on Kusama 48 hours after the next runtime upgrade. It will also be included in Polkadot's next runtime upgrade, ready to be enabled once running smoothly on Kusama.

Building a Highway: Introducing Asynchronous Backing

TL;DR

Think of Polkadot as a big castle with smaller houses inside called parachains. These houses need to send messages to the castle quickly. Currently, they can only send one message at a time, which is slow. But with asynchronous backing, it's like building a special road where multiple houses can send messages at once. This makes things much faster, about 10 times faster! This is important because some houses have lots of messages to send, like during a big party. Now everyone can send their messages quickly and enjoy the party.

With that in mind, how do you think this game-changing upgrade will revolutionize the way transactions are processed and pave the way for exciting new developments (DeFi, Gaming, AI, NFT, etc.) in Polkadot ecosystem?

Wavin GoodPost author

They call me a-not-so-Dr. Wavin Good. Blockchain architect by accident, an aspiring music-visualizing maestro, a chef of slightly-burnt midnight ramen, and my love for beer is as bubbly and persistent as a hard fork on a Friday night.

Co-founded Ethereum, birthed Polkadot, and still chases shiny tech like a Bitcoin-hangover canary with a crypto itch.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, friends. This blockchain lark is a messy business, like wrangling cats in a mosh pit. But hey, at least the beer's always cold, the code keeps me warm, and who knows, maybe one day we'll build a future where everyone can raise a glass to a decentralized pint of freedom.

Cheers! 🍺
