RMRK Hackathon Results

The RMRK Hackathon has finished. Let's look at some stats before declaring winners!

  • Over two months, the hackathon saw a total of 772 participants
  • We got a total of 61 submissions, 27 of which were disqualified for being previous work, plagiarism, or just plain unrelated to the hackathon
  • Our signup rate went from 0 to 455 participants using a Brave campaign
  • It went from 455 to 772 during the remainder of the time using Devpost's marketing and promotion
  • Despite participation numbers being impressive, the number of submissions was mildly disappointing considering the prize pools

Now let's dive into what these wizards of code and art produced!

Note: all financial rewards are in stablecoins: USDT, USDC, or DAI. Winners will be contacted with information how to claim. An invoice will be required.

Data Cruncher

👏 🙏 Thanks to sponsor D1 Ventures and Subsquid for co-sponsoring this category which focuses on data and number crunching!

🥇 Kramer (link) - $6000

An excellent calculation of rarity in Kanaria, explained in depth in this medium post and put into code in Kramer Tools. We found the tools a bit lacking on the code and UI/UX side, but the formulae and maths on all this are so good it clearly deserves first place - and we have no doubt the tools will evolve into something epic. Could this be the beginning of a RMRK-focused rarity.tools?

🥈 RMRK2psql (link) - $3000

Simple and effective, translates RMRK information into PostgreSQL so you can run sane, easy, structured queries on the entire NFT dataset. This makes explorers, rarity tools, analytics tools, bots, and more possible.

Tools and Apps

👏 🙏 Thanks to sponsor Phala Network and Signum Capital for co-sponsoring this category! The target was applications and middleware that leverage RMRK as either a back-end for some permissioning, or interact with RMRK in a way not possible (or not easy) with the official tools.

🥇 RMRKspyBot and Rarity/Estimation tool (link) - $6000

A Telegram bot for all kinds of RMRK and Kanaria alerts. Bot links are in the post! We (the team) can't stop looking at the streams. Clearly first place material.

🥈 RMRK 2.0 NFT maker (link) - $3000

A prospective UI for building the "Base" entity of RMRK2 projects - something arguably difficult to pull off right now if you're not intimately familiar with the spec and command line interactions. It's not exactly fully functional, but it's simple to use and shows great potential!

🥉 RMRK Twitter Bot (link) - $1000

Similar to the above Telegram bots, this one focuses on Twitter and posts recent sales. It can be configured for your own use if you grab an API key from Twitter and set the thresholds.

RMRK Rewrite

👏 🙏 Thanks to sponsors PolkaWarriors of IllusionistGRP and Ampnet.io for co-sponsoring this category! This category was all about RMRK in different languages and environments than its native Kusama!

🥇 Rust consolidator (link) - $6000

A very efficient full rewrite of the RMRK 2.0 spec in the Rust programming language. The new consolidator is incredibly efficient, much faster than our TS version, and we're considering replacing the current one with this. The downside is it's a bit harder to update, but it's orders of magnitude more efficient and works as a standalone tool, allowing for incredibly fast dump generation from unconsolidated dumps.

🥈 REMOV bridge (link) - $3000

An IOU-making bridge for RMRK 2.0 NFTs which locks the NFTs into a (custodial) account on the Kusama end and mints simple ERC721 IOUs on the Moonriver end. This allows you to list birds for sale on Moonriver's marketplaces, and take them back into Kusama when you need the functionality back.

In theory, this can work for any EVM.

This is a potentially dangerous tool and needs audits and tests before it can be deployed, but minting IOUs on EVMs is very much a possibility now.

The only reason why it wasn't first place is because it might go out of date before it becomes useful - with the migration of RMRK logic to pallets and contracts, we might have full-featured RMRK<->RMRK(EVM) migration sooner than expected.

🥉 RMRK in Move (link) - $1000

The Pontem team rewrote part of the 2.0 spec (the part that covers 1.0 functions) in the Move programming language, popularized by Facebook's Diem (ex Libra). While simplistic, it is a very clean implementation and we look forward to seeing how they iterate on this - we're excited about the prospect of briging RMRK to yet another environment and being Diem-ready.

👏 🙏 Thanks to sponsors 1PAR and PAKA for co-sponsoring this category and donating a Kanaria bird from their stash for the 1st place winner! Kanaria launched in September in full, so this was the perfect time to build on top of it.

🥇 Kanaria Wardrobe (link) - $6000

An incredibly intuitive and fast tool to try out all the various items in the Kanariaverse on your or anyone else's birds.

🥈 Birdwatching Bot (link) - $3000

Another excellent bot entry, this one is real time and looks specifcally for bird information like listings and sales.

🥉 RMRK Battles (link) - $1000

More an idea than full realization, this application reads Kanaria balances, allows you to pick a representative bird, and play RPS against another. The score is not logged and nothing happens on chain right now, but there is potential here in making the birds more interactive and maybe even playing with some prediction markets long-term.

Free For all

👏 🙏 Thanks to sponsor PoCoCo and ChaosDAO for co-sponsoring this category! The topic of this category was "anything goes"!

🥇 Kusama Go (link) - $6000

A fantastic application for real-world NFT seeking through geolocation. What's extra awesome about this application is that you as a user don't need a wallet to interact with the protocol. Due to Kusama's low fees, the application can optimize for user experience and sponsor the transactions needed to send NFTs around and sweep them when the user sits down behind a computer. Excellent work!

🥈 CryptoSamas (link) - $3000

A card-fighting game between Cryptosama NFTs (hints of Griftlands). High potential for fun in the NFT world.

🥉 UX Redo by Xylo (link) - $1000

A very good design presentation for the next level of Singular's minting experience - going into advanced mints with RMRK 2.0. A very very hard problem to solve, and this is truly a valiant attempt. Check out the video in the submissions for a demo.

🥇 Battle Of Eternity (link) - untouched epic LE

This is an excellent concept for fighting Kanaria with a great presentation and epic art. Unfortunately, the team ran out of time building REMOV, the bridge needed to make this a reality. Still, it qualifies as a non-tech and deserves a win.

🥈 Kanaria Comic Book (link) - untouched rare LE

Kitchenzky & Grood's Kanaria comic. Not much to it - it looks good, it's funny, and we kinda wish they'd made it into a lore-focused more "serious", longer thing.

🥉 A RMRK is Forever (link) - naked LE

Visual assets which, when put together, make a composable ring. In theory it should be equippable onto Kanaria birds. So yes, nested, composable, mutable NFTs that go into other nested, composable, mutable NFTs. In practice, we haven't built the renderer for multi-level composables yet, so it would not be visualized. Still, very interesting, even if the style doesn't fully match Kanaria.

This category focused on Kanaria equippables. Some excellent submissions, but three made the cut. These NFTs will be minted and sold by RMRK, but not before the artists behind them are rewarded.

🥇 K&G (link) - legendary mint + 5% royalties

Kitchenzky & Grood created a set of a whopping 32 items. Three of these (we won't tell you which ones yet!) will be minted in 7 copies each. 2 of each will be given to Kitchenzky and Grood, one each, while the rest will be sold on the open market. K&G keep 5% royalty forever.

🥈 Ash Lee (link) - epic mint + 3% royalties

Ash created multiple wearables / equippables too, and in this case also we've chosen three to mint for a total set of 63, three of which (one of each) will go to the creator. They also keep a royalty of 3%.

🥉 Kanaria Pirate Hat (link) - rare mint + 2% royalties

A single solitary pirate hat, but given how many pirate afficionados there are in our community we're sure it'll be a popular item. Creator keeps 2% of royalties, and total mint amount will be 201 with one going to the author.
