No Matter Hack, DotSama’s Secure! (July 29th - August 4th)

What is up, my friends! Despite the long-term market downturn, distractingly warm weather, and recent events that absolutely rekt’d some wallets, amazing work continues in DotSama every week, and this week is no exception.

Key projects are offering long-term solutions to match your long-term DCA strategy; Acala’s collateralized ACA staking event, or Algem’s nASTR token, are prime examples. Bifrost KSM liquid staking and Parallel’s KSM staking are great spots to park your KSM with minimized risks.

If you’re a part of the BIG 1.25M KSM unlock, then you have several KSM staking options to choose from.

Snow, rain, or even sunshine, we build community and infrastructure. Kusama Kings completed their last auction, leaving the DotSama community wondering… What’s comes next for the Kingdom?

Subwallet and Talisman are expanding with built-in DeFi solutions, bridging the divide between EVM and Substrate. In fact, r/Cryptocurrency has chatted with @birdo about Talisman EVM in their discord channel.

Beyond the walls of DotSama, we see connections to many projects, including Alchemy launching their dev platform on Astar (and hopefully other parachains soon) and Moonbeam working with the Ethereum community at ETHToronto this week.

TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK

Moonbeam went into Maintenance in response to the Nomad Bridge Hack

But Ser, what about that bridging hack!? First and foremost, this had nothing to do with Moonbeam’s technology or runtime! Yes, Moonbeam put the chain in maintenance to protect the network during the Nomad Bridge Hack. Having sudo access to halt block production is a responsible feature of young projects.

Still, we need to recognize the risks of DeFi. While third-party bridges are separate from parachains, their integrations carry risk to a network’s safety and total value locked. Additionally, participating in dApps that use bridged assets carries the risk of asset pools trending to zero.

Don’t be fooled! Mint-to-burn, atomic bridging, or lock-and-mint… any bridge has risks. The answer is to diversify across parachains and ecosystems and remind ourselves to only experiment with what we can afford to lose. It’s easy to get too bullish on our favorite projects.

Polkadot has a few answers to bridging. First, we have the transfer of XCM assets. Today, that means transfers are completed through the relay chain via HRMP (in the future XCMP will enable efficient cross-chain transfer).

We also have common good parachains that allow trusted parties to mint and transfer custom assets directly into Polkadot–that is, without using third-party bridge. USDT anyone?

The third solution comes from Darwinia’s Helix bridge. One layer of the Helix bridge will employ light client cross-chain bridging that can be widely applied to different ecosystems.

While none of these solutions are without risk, they are a demonstration of how the Dotsama community is building answers to the problems we face in DeFi. Now on to the usual flurry of news and content!

Integritee have now won a Polkadot Parachain Slot

Nitty Gritty

  • Logion is a “future parachain” working on saving your will to the blockchain.

  • Ruby gets the one-click node deployment service from OnFinality. The collaboration facilitates many advantages such as: the simple and rapid process of spinning up dedicated nodes, high scalability possibilities, cost-efficiency, and automated monitoring metrics for nodes. NOTE: Ruby Protocol is a cross-chain, privacy-first infrastructure. Its FE substrate-pallet allows for privacy-first smart contract DApps to be built on its chain.

  • Polkadot Naming System (PNS) partners with Subquery. PNS will allow you to use the .dot domain name to represent your wallets, NFTs, and other resources. The integration provides data accessibility for PNS, allowing PNS to query user on-chain data quickly.

  • Amplitude provides a quick recap and status update of its roadmap as we are nearing the launch of its parachain.

  • Nodle now supports the official Polkadot Public Key format (SR25519), this will allow users to import their nodle account to any third-party wallet.

  • Check out the article from Manta on Trusted setups. It gets into using ZKP on the MantaPay App. Looks into how keys are generated with a secret number. With the approach of secure multiparty computation within the trusted set-up ceremony, keys along with secret numbers (deemed toxic waste) are output. It is generally understood that with hundreds or thousands of participants one party will destroy the toxic waste, and in doing so makes the keys secure.

  • Nodle’s smartphone-powered decentralized network reaches a milestone of 500k token holders.

  • Polkadex partners with Subsquid, and as expected they will use Subsquid's API for Transaction Monitoring and Indexing Solutions for Polkadex Users.

Rumors & Alpha

Do Your Own Research! These finds are unconfirmed alpha in Dotsama

  • Zeitgeist was in Decentraland, what can they be up to?

  • SiO2 (Defi lending dApp on Astar) is expected to launch its mainnet at the end of the week.

  • Some excellent insight from @PJS. Check it out, and wen DotSama article? According to a recent article by Unstoppable Finance titled “Why Solana is more decentralized than you think”, it turns out Polkadot is three times more decentralized than Solana based on their respective "Nakamoto coefficients" despite Polkadot having only 15% as many validators as Solana. Put another way, while Solana "has a better distribution of stake across its validators than other networks such as Cosmos or NEAR", Polkadot blows Solana and every other major Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network out of the water when it comes to the decentralized distribution of block validation. Put yet another way, Polkadot's level of security is currently unmatched by any PoS-based network. Nobody is even remotely close.
